Last week, I told you how I got a puppy and how excited I
was to have her. Well it’s been a week and I’ve lived with her. I have found
that she is very, very annoying.
She tries to eat everything! She eats shoes (somehow only
mine), paper, human food, clothes, and even incense. Shelly cannot be left in a
room alone without her getting into something. She tries to jump up and get
anything that is sitting on the couches or ottoman. Since she is really little,
she can’t get up onto the couches. It’s kind of funny to watch her
struggle. She tries to bite the corner
of the couch that I usually sit on every time she walks by it. You cannot leave
anything alone or she will run somewhere with it and rip it apart. Luckily I
have managed to catch her before she has done any real damage to anything. Her
favorite thing to eat is the floor plant that is next to the the couch. She has
completely destroyed one of the branches of it. Even if you push her away from
it, she goes to the other side to get at it. I really hope that in the future when
she is older she won’t try to eat everything in sight.
She’s a biter. She tries to bite everything. She has bitten
my toes, my legs, my stomach, my fingers and even my lip. I really hope it is
because she is teething and that it won’t happen in the future. She’ll try to
bite your hands when you try to pet her. If you are sitting with your toes just
over the edge of the couch she will try and bite your toes (well at least she
does to me). We have bought her several teething toys and they’ve helped only a
little. It has gotten to the point where we give her “time-outs”, where we
stick her in her crate until she calms down. It only works sometimes. Most
times, if the “time-out” doesn’t work, we just take her out on a walk to
hopefully get rid of most of her energy. The problem with the walks is that she
still can’t really walk on her leash. The walks consist of me walking ahead of
my mom so that Shelly will walk after me, and even that doesn’t work all the
time because Shelly gets distracted really easily.
I guess she isn’t all that bad. She’s so cute with her
little uni-brow and her beard. She
doesn’t really have a uni-brow and beard, but because of the way her hair is
cut, it makes it look like that. It’s so cute when she yawns. You can see her
little pink tongue, her little teeth that aren’t fully grown, and she makes a
little squeaky noise. Sometimes, she sort of sounds like a guinea pig. When you
get home from anywhere or come downstairs in the morning, she gets all excited
and she starts doing this cute whine/bark. Shelly has only barked once and it
was in front of me, so my family doesn’t believe that she can bark.

Adorable! I want a puppy!
ReplyDeleteThe writing here is flawless: grammatical, expressive, and full of an authentic voice. I don't have any writing criticism to share today, which is a good thing for you.
A puppy-raising tip (just like last week): When she chews things that aren't designed to be chewed by puppies, it's essential to correct her immediately, and replace the item with an appropriate dog toy designed to be chewed. These will tend to be easier on the pup's mouth and more pleasing to taste. Then praise her copiously for chewing the appropriate toy, and give her a little treat. She will start to associate picking the right chew toy with being praised and rewarded, and the amount of time you spend correcting her will be reduced. It's win-win!
Also, train her to walk on the leash in the same way. Immediately correct undesirable behaviors and reward the behaviors you want her to repeat and learn. Simple, right?
